Sarah Teather, Brent's local Liberal Democrat MP, has congratulated James DeGale of Harlesden on his stunning gold medal win at the Beijing Olympics.
James DeGale, who was raised in Brent, won Great Britain's 19th gold at the Beijing Games with a 16-14 win over Cuba's Emilio Correa in the middleweight final. DeGale's medal was the British team's third in boxing - after bronzes for super-heavyweight David Price and light-heavyweight Tony Jeffries.
DeGale's medal, combined with the two gold medals won by cyclist Bradley Wiggins, who was brought up in Kilburn, brings Brent's total haul to 3. This would have placed the borough 28th in the international results table.
Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:
"I was absolutely thrilled to see Brent's James DeGale bring home gold from Beijing, and I know that the whole community will want to join me in sending James and his family warm congratulations.
"The spectacle of the Olympics has delighted the whole world, and many people in our community will be proud that Brent has played a part. Our borough also has an important role to play in 2012, and it's hugely exciting that Wembley is set to help host this prestigious international event.
"I very much hope that James DeGale's outstanding achievement will inspire the next generation of sportsmen and women in Brent."
