Sarah Backs Nick Clegg10.00.00am GMT Thu 18th Oct 2007
Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather will back Nick Clegg in the Liberal Democrat leadership contest. Sarah has been friends with Nick for many years. She believes he has the personality and vision to lead the Liberal Democrats, and to reach out and engage with voters in her constituency. The Liberal Democrats in Brent have gone from strength to strength in recent years, gaining 18 new Council seats in last year's local elections. The party were also buoyed by the Stonebridge by-election, which saw a 9% swing from Labour and a 15% swing from the Conservatives. Clegg has recently visited Brent twice to support Sarah's local campaigns. Sarah believes he can maintain and build on Brent Liberal Democrat's local success. Local Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said: "I have known Nick Clegg for a long time, and have immense admiration for him both personally and politically. Over the coming weeks he will set out his vision not just for the Liberal Democrats, but for the country. "One of the challenges for politicians today is to reengage those who are disaffected and feel politics can't change anything. I know that Nick has the energy and the personality to reach out to those who aren't usually interested in politics. "Nick has taken a stand on the issues that matter most to my constituents, such as the shocking reoffending rates of those released from prison, Labour's detention without trial, and the DNA database which appears to target young, black men. "People tell me that Labour and the Conservatives increasingly look like the same party. We know that voters want a real alternative, and there is no doubt that Nick Clegg is the person who can best sell the Liberal Democrats' distinctive values and ideas to people in Brent."
