Massive Swings To Lib Dems In Brent Central Ward10.00.00am GMT Fri 14th Sep 2007
Local Liberal Democrats were celebrating last night after securing massive swings from both Labour and the Conservatives in the Stonebridge by-election. The Conservatives are now out of the race in Brent, having dropped to 4th place with just 6% of the votes. Voters also delivered a 9% swing to the Liberal Democrats from Labour. Stonebridge ward, which had previously been considered a Labour stronghold, lies at the centre of the new Brent Central constituency which will be fought by popular local Lib Dem MP Sarah Teather at the next General Election. If the Stonebridge swing was repeated across Brent Central in a General Election, Sarah Teather would be confident of returning to parliament to fight for the people of Brent. Liberal Democrat Leader of Brent Council Paul Lorber said: "This is a great result for the Lib Dems, and makes a Liberal Democrat win at the next General Election all the more likely. Voters have turned away from both Labour and the Conservatives in their hundreds. "People are really responding to Sarah Teather's positive campaign for change in Brent. Labour have taken areas like Stonebridge for granted for too long." Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said: "This result proves that the Conservatives can't win in Brent. At the next election voters in Brent will face a clear choice between Labour and the Liberal Democrats. "People who want to take a stand against the disastrous policies of Blair and Brown should vote Liberal Democrat." Liberal Democrat Stonebridge Candidate Sandra Wiltshire said: "I want to thank everyone in Stonebridge who voted for me. Even though the election is over I will carry on helping local people with their problems. "Stonebridge is a great place with great people. They deserve Councillors and an MP who will really stand up for them." Related Links:
