Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather joined the Brent Indian Association to mark Indian Independence Day this week.

India's Independence Day is celebrated on August 15 to commemorate Indian independence from British rule in 1947. The day is a national holiday in India and is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremonies and the distribution of sweets.

The Brent Indian Association invited Brent's Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather and Paul Lorber, the Leader of Brent Council, to a flag-hoisting ceremony in Wembley.

Liberal Democrat MP for Brent East Sarah Teather said:

"Events like this provide an important moment of reflection. One of the best things about Brent is that we have lots of people from different cultures side by side.

"The Indian community in Brent has made a huge contribution to our borough, and I was delighted to be invited to mark this important anniversary with my constituents."
