Post Office Closure Announcement Angers Teather7.04.20pm GMT Wed 14th Jan 2004
Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has today spoken of her anger at the announcement of the Post Office's decision to close seven Post Offices in Brent. The announcement comes as part of a program of closures backed by the Labour Government. Brent East MP Sarah Teather has vowed to fight against the closures and raise the issue in Parliament. Only yesterday the Brent East MP was speaking out against Post Office closures in the House of Commons on behalf of Brent residents. Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said: "This a real body-blow for the people of Brent. Post Offices play a vital role in community life. This announcement is particularly concerning for the most vulnerable in our community such as the elderly and the disabled. I hope that local residents will join with me in saying 'NO' to these closures. I shall be looking to raise this issue in Parliament at the earliest opportunity. "I find it appalling that the Labour Government is actively encouraging the destruction of our local Post Office network. Now that Ken Livingstone has rejoined Tony Blair's Labour party, will he back his party's support of seven local Post Offices in Brent being closed? "Under this Labour Government a third of all urban post offices are set to close and when the Conservatives were in power 4,000 local post offices were closed. The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight against the closures of local Post Offices."
